The Story Behind the Brand
As previously blogged, here at Pilates Tree, we are big fans of Pilates and Yoga Wear label; Asquith London. Season after season, their dedication to style and comfort has made them a huge hit in the realm of yoga and Pilates. They truly understand the ethos of Pilate goers. But how did it all start? Where was the inspiration behind the brand?
The company’s namesake and founder, Alice Asquith has always had an interest in well-made apparel l. As a regular partaker in yoga and Pilates, Alice sensed a hole in the market for attire that was comfortable and practical for activity, and also was stylish, as most teachers live in their kit, day in, day out. Alice placed importance not only on good styles, but on good fabrics. Alice’s passion for natural and organic textiles complimented the ethos of yoga and Pilates perfectly, hence making it an appealing line in the market.
Ten years later, and well carved out in the world of leisurewear, Asquith London has a flock of followers that adore the styles and the materials. Perfect for leisurewear and everyday life too, their line can be worn outside the studio or gymnasium. Because of the easy and soft styling and the less obvious athletic feel of the clothes, Asquith has fans all over. Each season, Asquith’s pieces remain true to comfort and freedom of movement. They are soft to the touch and each piece subtly accented with their signature Swarovski crystal. What isn’t there to love?

At the recent Yoga Show in London’s Olympia, if there was one stand in particular that was drawing in the crowds and making a killing, it was the Asquith stall.
A firm favourite in the yoga and Pilates’ world, Asquith clearly has a huge following and it’s clear to see why. Comfortable and functional leisurewear with fashionable twists, Asquith London is all about feeling and looking good in your kit. For teachers, it’s so important to love your kit and feel happy in it both in style and physical-comfort, since these are the clothes that teachers are in 75 per cent of their time. Asquith meets the criteria.
The Asquith AW12 line has introduced tie dye elements, an interesting design detail to update leisure classics like the cami vest, leggings and fold-over pants. Gentle draping and layering creates soft textures that are both comfortable and flattering. Teaming leggings with the Asquith twist front cardigan creates a silhouette that balances out different volumes (fitted bottoms, oversized top). This season’s palette showcases autumnal tones such as fig purples, plum burgundys, chocolate browns and dark slate greys, with a small burst of bright coral shades.
This season is not only appealing to the eye, but as always with the Asquith label, the fabric used is primarily organic cotton and bamboo. The Asquith website professes that bamboo gets you drier faster, has temperature control properties and is anti-bacterial function.
If you needed any more convincing of what a wonder brand Asquith London (http://www.asquithlondon.com) is, it is completely fair-trade, and eco-conscious. Need we say more?
I have often been asked, by my clients, ‘What should I wear when I come to pilates class?’. My response is this same every time: socks and anything comfortable… but then I thought, why not ask aspiring, young stylist for help. We are hoping that this is the first in a series of articles about Pilates fashion. Enjoy and do not hesitate to comment and throw in suggestions of clothes and labels we could check out!
Luxurious and Functional
Fashion and sports need not be mutually exclusive. This was definitely the case at this year’s Olympics. British designer, Stella McCartney was of course appointed as creative director of designing Team GB’s uniform. In collaboration with Adidas, McCartney created a distinctive look for our team whilst always keeping the design practical for our sportsmen. It was a year never to forget for Team GB and a stylish kit to boot. Let’s not also forget, fashion royalty, Giorgio Armani created the look for Team Italy. It’s clear to see that sports and leisure wear can indeed be stylish, or at least not unstylish!
When it comes to practising Pilates, comfort is paramount and this is an important factor when deciding what to wear. We’ve put together some high quality sport staples that feel great against the skin, and are easy to move in.
A soft cotton t-shirt is invaluable to a Pilates-goer, here are our top 3 of the moment:
- Vince Little Boy Tee – Because of the cotton and modal blend, this t-shirt feels amazing soft against your skin.
- Amrican Vintage Supima Cotton T-shirt – They call it a second skin for a reason, this t-shirt represents ultimate comfort, completely moulding to your body without feeling tight.
- Aubin and Wills Tenbury Tee – Who doesn’t love a pocket tee, a great alternative to you usual plain t-shirt. The cotton and viscose blend make for a comfy style.
A good pair of leggings is simply an essential part of your Pilates’ kit. We think these three styles will tick that box.
- 1. American Apparel Cotton Spandex High Waisted Leggings – a brand that does cotton well, this style is particularly comfortable because of the higher waistband.
- 2. Sweaty Betty Control Leggings – What’s not to love about this style? They have a rolled down waistband for comfort, feel super soft and are made from bamboo, which means they are naturally anti-bacterial and sustainable.
- 3. Splendid Stretch Jersey Leggings– a cotton and modal blend with a touch of spandex, these leggings will feel amazing.1. 2. 3. 1.1. 2.2. 3.3.
